Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Digitalization

Profile

The Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Digitalization (TED) competence profile provides students with up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge to design and develop innovative business models based on technologies for new, young and established companies. The professorships that are part of this competence profile value an intensive, interdisciplinary exchange with companies, for example through guest lectures and a close cooperation with the Center for Entrepreneurship and Transfer (CET) and TU Dortmund University's Dlab.

For example, technology can be used by companies to identify patterns in their own data using data analysis tools and artificial intelligence to make informed decisions and optimize business strategies. The TED profile also looks at how different technologies can be used to create innovative products or product features. These include, for example, autonomous parking, carbon bodies in cars or the optimization of production processes through the use of additive manufacturing processes in the automotive industry.

In the area of entrepreneurship, methods for identifying opportunities, creating and evaluating ideas are taught. Students learn how to develop structured business models and business plans for their ideas and how to acquire financing in order to successfully found and manage a startup. In this area, too, the TED Cluster works closely with business partners. Lectures are accompanied by founders who outline their career path and their companies. Examples of successful startups by TED alumni include the digital veterinary practice Rex or the digital insurance consultancy Thinksurance GmbH.

The area of digitalization deals in particular with new, platform-based business models, agile project management, digital service innovations and the digitalization of work.

In summary, the TED competence profile enables students to develop a strong understanding of technology, entrepreneurship and digitalization, their use in business practice. and how this fundamentally changes companies. This empowers students to shape their business ideas. It sets them up to be innovative within companies, adapting these  to ever-changing business environments to remain competitive. The TED profile is designed to help students acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully meet these challenges and maximize their professional potential.

Team Lead in the area of IT-Consulting Digitalization for adesso SE
„As a graduate of the Business and Economics department at TU Dortmund University, I have acquired knowledge and many valuable skills that have helped me on my career path to becoming a team leader in IT consulting. In my day-to-day work, it's all about reacting quickly to new issues and challenges in the hectic project environment and coming up with creative solutions for customers and employees. One of the most important things I took away from my studies were the topics from innovation and technology management. I learned how innovative projects are developed and implemented in companies, and how important it is to understand the market and the needs of the people involved in order to be successful. In doing so, I was able to develop my skills in communicating and managing projects, especially by working in interdisciplinary teams.“
