First Steps in Academia

Female students in our department who are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. or who would like to gain initial insight into academic conferences can apply for financial support to attend conferences and workshops.

Funding is available in particular for participation in events where students present their own research — for example, results from final theses or project work. The maximum funding amount is €500 per conference or workshop participation with an own presentation; for selected destinations abroad, funding of up to €1,000 is possible. In addition, a one-time grant of up to €250 may be awarded for participation in events without an own presentation.

Attending academic events is an excellent opportunity to learn about current research topics, meet researchers in person, and establish initial contacts for one’s own academic network. Many conferences also offer dedicated formats for students and early-career researchers. One example is the annual conference of the Verein für Socialpolitik, which regularly provides exciting insights into current research in economics and business studies.
