On November 8, 2025, TU Dortmund University once again opened its doors and offered visitors the opportunity to discover the university up close. The Department of Business and Economics presented itself in the Audimax foyer of the main mathematics building with two offers that not only explained research, but made it tangible: an interactive hands-on activity from the field of management science and an immersive exhibition on digital transformation.

Management Science
Simply optimal?! - Mathematics to join in and take away

Anyone who wanted to get closer to the world of rational decision-making found the "Simply optimal?!" hands-on activity an ideal introduction. Between small brainteasers and everyday decision-making scenarios, visitors were able to try out how optimization works in everyday life: the fastest way from A to B, the smartest purchase or strategic considerations that are in the background of many operational processes.

The domino portrait station was particularly popular. Boxes full of black and white dominoes were used to create an artistic black-and-white image of one's own face: dominoes with many dots formed dark areas, those with few dots formed the lighter areas. An algorithmic work of art - and a souvenir that many proudly took home with them.

There were also practical, tangible math puzzles to try out. Visitors were able to puzzle, try things out and experience that "optimization" often feels more intuitive than you might think.

Digital Transformation
Experience the digital future: from smart homes to virtual reality

A completely different world opened up right next door. The white VR goggles, which formed small portals into digital spaces in the middle of the foyer, caught the eye at first glance. Anyone who put them on suddenly found themselves in an immersive environment in which mathematical puzzles could be solved spatially and playfully. Here, mathematics became something that could be experienced: direct, intuitive and surprisingly accessible.

Another eye-catcher was a model made of LEGO technology, which showed how digital assistance systems could support work processes in the future. Step-by-step instructions appeared directly above the model via a tablet - a tangible example of how virtual assistance could facilitate production processes.

The WizARd and Opt-In research projects made it possible to experience digital technologies of the future: create your own AR content, immerse yourself in mixed reality worlds or experience how intelligent lighting and networked devices influence everyday life in the smart home area. The exhibition combined curiosity, interaction and a glimpse into the future and showed how closely digital technologies are linked to the department's research.

Economics at the TU Dortmund University

With its two offers, the Department of Business and Economics once again showed how lively, practical and diverse research can be.

Visitors not only gained insights into scientific projects, but were also able to actively participate, try things out and be amazed.
