New Year's Symposium 2012
In 2012, Prof. Andreas Liening was able to secure the former Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Gerhard Schröder, as a guest speaker for the New Year's Symposium. He spoke to students and pupils from Dortmund about the "Prospects and challenges for Germany and Europe in a globalized world" in the packed Audimax of the TU Dortmund University.

The list of personalities from Dortmund, North Rhine-Westphalia and Germany who accepted Prof. Liening's invitation is long: top politicians from the federal and state governments, the mayor of the city of Dortmund, the rector of the TU Dortmund University as well as the professors of the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences, the city of Dortmund's chief of police, representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and a large number of principals from Dortmund schools were guests at the TU Dortmund University to listen to the speech of the former chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Gerhard Schröder, born in 1944, was Prime Minister of Lower Saxony from 1990 to 1998 and Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from 1998 to 2005. In his speech at the TU Dortmund University, he focused on the challenges for Europe posed by the Euro crisis. In doing so, he outlined a reform agenda for Europe to stabilize the Euro, generate growth and improve the competitiveness of member states. The former chancellor also called for a move toward "real political union" with common financial, economic and social policies. Despite the current difficulties, Schröder expressed his conviction that Europe has great opportunities for the future.
The TU Dortmund University initiated the New Year's Symposium of Economic Education together with the Stadtgymnasium Dortmund. The aim is to strengthen the economic education of young people. "Economic education is very close to our hearts in Dortmund," says initiator Prof. Andreas Liening from the Chair of Entrepreneurship and Economic Education. In addition to teacher training in economics, the chair runs a number of projects to anchor economic education: These include the Junior Business School for school students, which was honored as a UNESCO World Decade Project in 2010. Also worth mentioning in this context is the Entrepreneurship School for people interested in starting a business at the TU Dortmund University.
