Data Sovereignty in Focus: Project Opt-IN featured in the TU video series “Research Snapshots”

The professorship Digital Transformation is featured in the current season of the university-wide video series “Research Snapshots.

The Chair is featured in the current season of the university-wide video series “Research Snapshots.” The format presents selected TU Dortmund research projects that adress socially relevant issues.

Our video introduces the research project Opt-IN (Optimizing Informational Sustainability for Citizens in Data Ecosystems). In light of the increasing data collection in everyday life through smart-home devices, social media, and other connected technologies, the project addresses a central challenge: How can citizens maintain or regain control and sovereignty over their personal data?

In the video, Prof. Dr. Manuel Wiesche explains two main objectives of our research:

  • Understanding user behavior: We examine which factors influence users’ decision-making, trust, and behavior and motivate them to share or refuse their data.
  • Shaping technology and platforms: We derive concrete design recommendations for future smart-home products, services, and data platforms that will give citizens more say and sovereign control over how their data are used.

We warmly invite you to watch the segment to gain insight into our research activities in this important context.
