Study on the joint value creation of developers and platform owners in Generative AI platform ecosystems.

Vincent Heimburg, Maximilian Schreieck and Manuel Wiesche - "Complementor Value Co-Creation in Generative AI Platform Ecosystems"

The study investigates value co-creation in Generative AI platform ecosystems, which are characterized by two specific features of Generative AI: Openness to results ("open-endedness") and opacity ("inscrutability"). This leads to new challenges for developers on the platform when it comes to value co-creation. For example, the two characteristics prevent the platform from offering developers standardized and reusable functions and the platform services from providing developers with consistent results. Using a case study of the OpenAI platform ecosystem, the study identifies four "value co-creation" mechanisms that mitigate these challenges: (1) the use of system instructions, (2) the provision of contextual data, (3) the targeted control of user input and (4) the revision of AI outputs. Two central logics are derived from this, which explain how developers can successfully use the platform and differentiate themselves.

The Journal of Management Information Systems is one of the most respected journals in information systems and is part of the Financial Times 50 ranking, which includes the top 50 journals in business research.
