Hands-on research: Open House Day 2024
Digital transformation
Experience the digital future: from smart homes to virtual reality
Visitors were not only able to experience the fascinating world of virtual reality, but also find out how smart technologies can change our homes and working environments. The WizARd and Opt-In projects were presented. VR glasses, a modell excavator and an infographic on smart homes illustrated the research topics. At WizARd, interested visitors could try out VR goggles and immerse themselves in a virtual wooden hut in which animated math problems appeared that could be solved. In addition to the VR goggles, the Microsoft HoloLens offered insights into exciting mixed reality worlds. The excavator served as an illustrative object: captured via a tablet, an application showed step-by-step instructions for assembling the excavator, demonstrating the use of virtual reality to guide production processes.
The Opt-In project provided a vivid insight into what the smart home of the future could look like. A poster showed how various electronic devices can collect user information to create profiles for residents.
Marketing
Going online - insights into customer behavior on the internet
In his presentation "Going online - insights into customer behavior on the Internet", Dr. Sören Köcher showed in a vivid way how purchasing behavior can be influenced in a targeted manner. Using everyday examples such as coffee-to-go and digital cameras, he showed how certain mechanisms are used to influence our rational decisions, especially when we buy online.
Management Science
Simply optimal? Visualized optimization as photo art
The hands-on activity by the Management Science department combined mathematics and art. With the help of optimization methods, visitors were able to transform their own photo into a unique work of art made from dominoes. In the resulting black and white images, darker areas were formed from dominoes with many dots, while in lighter areas, mainly dominoes with few dots were used. Visitors were able to take the image with them as a souvenir.
In addition to this visualization of optimization, many exciting mathematical puzzles were presented in which the optimal path led to the solution.
Business and Economics at TU Dortmund University
At TU Dortmund University's largest open day to date, visitors were able to get to know the university from new, interesting and unusual perspectives. The Department of Business and Economics was also able to provide insights into some of its diverse research areas and projects and show how exciting and practical its work can be.
