Article in Fortune on key factors for the mental well-being of entrepreneurs

Interview with Prof. Daniela Gimenez Jimenez about her research and her experiences with the UA Ruhr Future's Fellowship program
Can you briefly describe your research on the mental well-being of entrepreneurs?
As entrepreneurs pour their heart and soul into their businesses, we want to uncover the impact of their dedication on decision-making. Our research focuses on how well-being influences entrepreneurs' choices to grow their ventures. We also aim to identify the coping mechanisms they use to tackle the unique challenges they face.
What is the most important insight from your research that you would give to any entrepreneur?
One important insight from our research is that poor well-being can negatively affect your business. What’s truly fascinating is the powerful role of social support! Family, friends, and mentors can significantly boost an entrepreneur's well-being. Additionally, recognizing personal limits allows entrepreneurs to recharge and thrive.
Was there a particular result of the study that surprised you?
One surprising finding from our research is that the majority of entrepreneurs have reported experiencing anxiety, burnout, or depression. However, those who successfully set boundaries between their personal and business lives saw a significant reduction in these mental health challenges. Establishing these boundaries allows entrepreneurs to thrive in their ventures while maintaining their well-being.
What do you see as the next logical step in your research? Is there anything you are particularly interested in?
We’re excited to share that we are currently collecting a second wave of data to gain a longitudinal perspective on this important issue. Additionally, we are in the process of writing a scientific article and one more piece for public media. As we delve deeper, new questions continue to emerge, and we look forward to expanding our research in this area!
Beyond the data and the findings, what is it about the human side of entrepreneurship that you find most compelling to study?
What I find most compelling about studying entrepreneurship is the human-centered approach. It helps us understand the true drivers behind entrepreneurs, revealing that they are not the lone wolves often portrayed in the media. Recognizing the importance of community, support, and collaboration can transform our understanding of what it means to be an entrepreneur.
How do the insights from your research shape the way you teach your entrepreneurship students?
The insights from my research significantly influence the way I teach my entrepreneurship students. I strive to be a mentor for them, helping them thrive in their entrepreneurial journeys. One key lesson I emphasize is the importance of pacing themselves and taking their time with their endeavors. This topic has become an integral part of my teaching approach, fostering a supportive environment where students can grow both personally and professionally.
Can you tell us a little about your experience with the UA Ruhr Future Fellowship Program?
- The UA Ruhr Future Fellowship has been an incredible opportunity for me! It allowed me to conduct research that holds significant relevance for both academia and society. Additionally, I had the chance to visit Lehigh University, strengthening the relationship between TU Dortmund and Lehigh. Serving as an ambassador for TU Dortmund in the USA was truly rewarding. During my time there, I presented my work and guest lectured at several esteemed institutions, including the University of California, Sacramento, New York University, Montclair State University, and of course, Lehigh University. Plus, I expanded my network of friends along the way! I’m grateful for this enriching experience!
Thank you very much for the interview!
